Overcome trauma and PTSD | Learning to manage nightmares and flashbacks

Have you experienced a traumatic event? Do you have distressing dreams about the trauma that scare you? Do you become upset when encountering situations or emotions that remind you of the trauma? Do you avoid things related to the trauma? Do you feel more tense and irritable than usual?

Trauma refers to an event or series of highly threatening events that lead to feelings of fear, helplessness, and horror. Some examples of traumatic experiences include childhood abuse (emotional, physical, sexual or neglect), domestic violence (being abused or witnessing abuse), bullying, physical assault, rape or sexual assault, natural disasters, war and combat and road traffic accident. Dealing with trauma is tough. It takes time, determination, and often support from others. It starts with acknowledging and processing the traumatic experiences, often with the help of a therapist. This may involve techniques such as CBT, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), or mindfulness practices. These strategies help individuals learn about trauma and its effects, cope with the effects, reprocess traumatic memories, come to terms with what happened, and move beyond the trauma. Over time, therapy empowers individuals to integrate their experiences, heal emotional wounds, and reclaim their lives.

The road to healing may have its ups and downs, but with time and dedication, individuals can learn to manage their symptoms, regain a sense of safety, and reclaim their lives from the grip of trauma. Recovery often happens in small steps, and sometimes things may get worse before they get better.
