Eye Movement and Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an incredibly effective psychotherapy backed by scientific evidence, designed to help individuals overcome the impact of traumatic events on their mental health. By properly reprocessing distressing memories, EMDR therapy can significantly alleviate past pain and is known to be effective in treating conditions such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety across all age groups. EMDR therapy is internationally recognized and endorsed by various esteemed organizations, including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the World Health Organization, The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the NHS in the UK.
What is an EMDR session like?
EMDR harnesses your body's natural healing ability. Following a comprehensive assessment, you will be guided to focus on a specific distressing memory. Through simple eye movements, similar to those during REM sleep, or using moving lights or headphones, the memory's painful intensity can be reduced. As you revisit the memory during these sets of eye movements, you may experience a transformative shift in thoughts, images, and feelings. Repeated sets of eye movements can lead to significant changes in how you perceive the memory, making it less distressing and more neutral. This process can also facilitate the healing of associated memories, potentially leading to rapid and profound improvements in various areas of your life.
What can EMDR be used for?
In addition to its use for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, EMDR has been successfully used to treat:
- anxiety and panic attacks
- depression
- stress
- phobias
- sleep problems
- complicated grief
- addictions
- pain relief, phantom limb pain
- self-esteem and performance anxiety
